Parents: Malissa & Eric
When I was 20 weeks pregnant I felt a gush of fluid when I was lying on the couch. I called my doctor and was told to come in immediately. When I went in for my ultrasound I saw the technician holding back tears and I knew something was wrong. I got dressed and went into a waiting room while I waited for the midwife. I was told that most of my amniotic fluid was gone and that the doctor wanted to see me at the hospital. I was devistated at the thought of losing our sweet boy. My husband met me at the hospital where we were told that without the amniotic fluid, the chance of our baby boy developing his lungs was so small. Even with that news, I couldn’t bare the thought of inducing, because he had a strong heartbeat and I could still feel him moving. He stayed in my belly for another week and continued to move reminding me how strong he is, and my husband got to feel him move for the first time, that was a blessing. I was continuously monitored for infection and about a week later my white blood cell count was alarmingly high,

and they admitted me to the hospital. From that point forward a band of angels surrounded my family. The deacon from my parent’s church came and prayed with us. My incredible nurse has a son with the same name we had chosen. My midwife stayed five hours past her shift to be with us, and came back when he was born. My family came to be by our side to comfort us.
Kai William Mack was born at 11:30 on November 1, 2016. He wasn’t breathing, but he was otherwise perfect. We held him all night and into the next day. We will never forget holding his tiny body in our arms and admiring his perfect little fingers and toes. It was so comforting to see him dressed in his gown and wrapped in a knitted blanket. Rachel’s Gift was with us from the moment we laid eyes on Kai, through our support group, and today in our most cherished keepsakes of our son.

We miss Kai William so much and love him deeply. We constantly feel his presence all around us. Ever since Kai was born and went to heaven, my husband and I see ladybugs all the time, in our house, in our cars, in the rain and even in the winter. We even found one on his little sister’s ultrasound. We love you Kai, our little Love Bug, happy birthday buddy. Till we meet again.
